How to pick a plumber without getting burned

Five questions to ask any plumber before you write a check.
By Texas Go2GuyGuide2 min read

Most homeowners only call a plumber when something has already gone wrong. By then you're stressed, the floor's wet, and you're looking at an after-hours rate. So you say yes to the first quote.

That's exactly when you get the worst version of every plumber. Here are five questions worth asking first.

1. License and insurance, in writing

Ask for the license number, and check it with the state licensing board. A plumber who's proud of the license puts the number on the truck and the website. Ask for the master's number and the apprentice's.

While you're at it, ask for general liability and workers' comp. A plumber who can't produce a certificate of insurance does not work in your house.

2. The flat-rate vs. time-and-materials answer

Ask: "Is this flat-rate or time and materials?" The answer should be immediate and matter-of-fact. If they hedge, that's information.

Flat-rate isn't always cheaper, but it tells you what you're paying before they start. Time and materials can be honest if you trust the plumber, but it's how most surprise bills happen.

3. Who does the actual work

Ask who's coming today, and whether they're working under direct supervision. A good plumber knows the answer and gives it plainly.

4. Their warranty wording

"We stand behind our work" is not a warranty. A real warranty says how long it lasts and what it covers. Get it on the invoice. If that dishwasher install leaks later, you want to point at the line.

5. How they handle the no

The best test of a plumber is how they handle pushback. Ask why a quote is what it is. Ask if there's a cheaper option. Ask if it can wait. The good ones answer like a doctor — clearly, with the trade-offs spelled out. The bad ones get short with you.
